An overview is presented of the studies related to the biosynthesis of alkaloids published in Phytochemistry in the past 50 years.

A dihydropyridone alkaloid, cenocladamide, and a derivative of piplartine, 4'-desmethylpiplartine were isolated along with piplartine from the leaves of Piper cenocladum.
